Forte Board Reply — Step 4: Implementation Summary

Stage 1 - Hidden compose panel and disabled Reply button

  • Changes:

    • Added templates/partials/paned_board_compose_panel.php: a board-specific, thread-agnostic wrapper around partials/reply_form.php, rendered once with empty thread_id/parent_id (no default selection exists in board view) and returnTo = /forte.

    • Included it from templates/partials/paned_board_content_pane.php after the per-thread loop.

    • Added a disabled toolbar Reply button (data-paned-board-reply) to templates/pages/forte_board.php, positioned after New like the single-thread reader's layout.

  • Verification:

    • php -l clean on all three changed/added files.

    • curl http://127.0.0.1:8001/forte — 200 OK; Reply button renders disabled; compose panel renders hidden with empty thread_id/parent_id hidden inputs.

    • curl http://127.0.0.1:8001/threads/root-001/forte — unaffected (0 matches for board-specific hooks), confirming the single-thread reader wasn't touched.

  • Notes:

    • reply_form.php reused unchanged, same as in forte_reply.

Stage 2 - Wire toggle and selection-based enable/disable

  • Changes:

    • public/assets/paned_board_reader.js: hoisted replyButton/composePanel lookups near the top of DOMContentLoaded; added a click handler on [data-paned-board-reply] toggling the panel's hidden attribute (guarded by both refs existing, mirroring paned_reader.js's pattern); selectThread() now enables the button; resetContentPane() (the existing no-selection path, also used when a tag filter hides the selected thread) now disables the button and re-hides the panel.

  • Verification:

    • node --check public/assets/paned_board_reader.js clean.

    • Headless-browser test (Selenium + chromium-browser) on /forte: Reply starts disabled and the panel starts hidden; selecting the "hi" thread enables Reply; clicking it twice toggles the panel open then closed; zero SEVERE console log entries.

    • Screenshot of the opened panel confirms it renders identically to the single-thread reader's composer (same beveled "Compose Reply" head, monospace textarea, toolbar-style buttons) — no new CSS was needed, as planned.

  • Notes:

    • Disabling the button also naturally blocks its click handler in the browser (disabled buttons don't fire click), so no extra guard was needed beyond setting .disabled.

Stage 3 - Sync compose target with board selection

  • Changes:

    • public/assets/paned_board_reader.js: added a shared setComposeTarget(threadId) helper (used by both selectThread() and resetContentPane(), avoiding the duplicated field-lookup logic a first pass had) that sets the panel's hidden thread_id/parent_id inputs to the given value. selectThread() calls it with the selected thread's id; resetContentPane() calls it with "" to clear both fields when nothing is selected (including when a tag-filter change hides the previously selected thread, which already routed through resetContentPane()).

  • Verification:

    • node --check public/assets/paned_board_reader.js clean.

    • Headless-browser test (Selenium + chromium-browser) on /forte: selecting thread A sets both hidden fields to A's root_post_id; selecting thread B updates them to B's id; clicking a folder tag that excludes the selected thread B triggers the existing resetContentPane() path, clearing both fields to "" and re-disabling Reply. Zero SEVERE console log entries.

  • Notes:

    • No changes needed to the tag-filter (selectFolder) or prev/next/keyboard handlers — they already funnel through selectThread/resetContentPane, same reuse win as forte_reply Stage 3.

Stage 4 - Return to board view after replying

  • Changes:

    • Application.php::resolveComposeReplyReturnTo(): extended (not duplicated) to also accept the literal /forte as a valid return target, alongside the existing /threads/{threadId}/forte pattern; anything else still falls back to the classic /threads/{threadId} location.

    • paned_board_compose_panel.php already passed returnTo = '/forte' (set in Stage 1), so no further wiring was needed there.

  • Verification:

    • php -l clean.

    • curl -i -X POST /compose/reply with return_to=/forte → 303 redirect Location targets /forte?created_post_id=...#post-....

    • Regression checks, all unchanged from forte_reply: no return_to falls back to classic /threads/{id}; a malicious return_to (https://evil.example.com) falls back to classic; the existing /threads/{id}/forte return path still resolves correctly for single-thread submissions.

    • curl http://127.0.0.1:8001/forte/threads/root-001/replies after submitting from the board view shows the new reply body — board-view replies load lazily via that endpoint rather than being embedded in /forte's initial HTML, which is existing (unchanged) behavior, not a regression.

  • Notes:

    • This completes all 4 planned stages for forte_board_reply.
