Forte Board Reply Tree — Step 4: Implementation Summary

Stage 1 - Bulk-fetch and eager render

  • Changes:

    • Application.php: added fetchAllThreadReplyPosts(): array<string, array<int, array>> — a single query fetching every non-root post across all threads (WHERE posts.thread_id != posts.post_id), ordered by thread_id, sequence_number, grouped into a per-thread array in PHP (avoids one query per thread).

    • renderForteBoard(): builds a $replyTreesByThreadId map by calling the existing buildReplyTree() once per thread against that grouped data, and passes it to the page template.

    • templates/partials/paned_board_content_pane.php: renders partials/paned_thread_reply_tree.php inline for every thread with replies, replacing the "Show N replies" button and empty lazy-load container.

  • Verification:

    • php -l clean on both changed files.

    • curl http://127.0.0.1:8001/forte: 200 OK, 1.1MB, 124ms total — no "Show ... repl" button text or paned-reply-toggle anywhere in the page (0 matches).

    • Spot-checked the heaviest thread (root-001, 34 replies after this session's testing): all 34 reply nodes render inline with correct, unique data-paned-reply-post-ids, in the same chronological order sequence_number would produce, content matching what was actually posted (confirmed a specific reply's text is present).

  • Notes:

    • Page weight/timing (1.1MB / ~124ms for 513 threads / 503 replies) is well within the "acceptable" bar Step 2 called for — no further optimization needed at this data volume.

Stage 2 - Remove dead client-side lazy-load logic

  • Changes:

    • public/assets/paned_board_reader.js: removed replyCache, toggleReplies(), and the contentPane click listener that dispatched to it (no [data-paned-reply-toggle] elements exist anymore after Stage 1).

    • Simplified the "highlight the new reply after a board-view submit" logic: it now looks up [data-paned-reply-post-id="..."] directly within contentPane (the tree is already rendered) instead of calling toggleReplies() to expand it first.

  • Verification:

    • node --check public/assets/paned_board_reader.js clean; grep confirms zero remaining references to toggleReplies, replyCache, or any data-paned-reply-toggle/-url/-container attribute.

    • Headless-browser test (Selenium + chromium-browser): selecting root-001 shows all 34 reply nodes immediately (no click needed); a fresh reply submitted from the board view still redirects back with the new reply highlighted and in view; zero console errors.

  • Notes:

    • No changes needed elsewhere — selectThread()/resetContentPane()'s existing clearHighlights() call still works unchanged since it targets the .paned-highlight-new class, not anything toggle-related.

Stage 3 - Remove the now-unused backend endpoint

  • Changes:

    • Application.php: removed the /forte/threads/{id}/replies route match and the renderForteThreadReplies() method it dispatched to.

  • Verification:

    • php -l clean.

    • curl http://127.0.0.1:8001/forte/threads/root-001/replies → 404 (route gone).

    • curl http://127.0.0.1:8001/forte and curl http://127.0.0.1:8001/threads/root-001/forte both still 200.

  • Notes:

    • TemplateRenderer::renderFragment() (the generic method renderForteThreadReplies() called) is now unused but was left in place — it's a small, general-purpose public method on the renderer, not feature-specific, and removing it wasn't part of this stage's scope. Flagging it here in case a future cleanup pass wants to remove it once confirmed nothing else needs a bare-fragment render.

Stage 4 - Full regression and scale spot-check

  • Changes: none (verification only, as planned).

  • Verification:

    • grep -c "paned-reply-toggle\|Show .* repl\|Hide replies" on /forte's HTML → 0; no toggle/expand affordance remains anywhere.

    • Final page weight/timing: /forte is 1.15MB in ~45ms at current volume (513 threads / 503 replies) — consistent with Stage 1's measurement, confirming Stage 2/3's removals didn't regress anything.

    • Re-ran the full board-view round trip from forte_board_reply_restore (filter by tag → select thread → open composer, confirming return_to still reflects both → submit → redirect carries the same tag/selected → thread re-selected and Reply enabled on reload) — all still passes unchanged against the now-eager reply tree.

    • Re-ran the single-thread reader's own highlight-on-reply test (/threads/root-001/forte) — unaffected, as expected, since that page never used the lazy endpoint.

    • Zero console errors across all of the above.

  • Notes:

    • This completes all 4 planned stages for forte_board_reply_tree. The "Show N replies" button and its network round-trip are gone; replies are simply part of the board page now, at an acceptable cost given the site's current data volume.
