Forte Board View Step 4 Implementation Summary
Stage 1 - New /forte route and folder tree
Changes:
src/ForumRewrite/Application.php: added route^/forte/?$(grouped with the other Forte routes) dispatching to newrenderForteBoard(): string, which calls the existingfetchThreads()andgroupThreadsByTag()unchanged and renders viarenderer()->renderStandalonePage()(the same standalone-page path added for the single-thread Forte reader).templates/partials/paned_folder_tree.php: new partial rendering "All Threads" (with the total thread count) plus one row per tag group (name + count).templates/pages/forte_board.php: stub page rendering just the folder tree inside.paned-window, to prove routing/data reuse before the other panes exist.
Verification:
php -lon all three files: no syntax errors.GET /forte→200; folder tree showed "All Threads: 3" and 6 tag rows.Cross-checked against
/tags/?x=1(forcing PHP-fallback rendering rather than a stale cached static artifact — the plain/tags/request was serving an out-of-date static HTML artifact from before this session's test-suite run added fixture data, an unrelated pre-existing staleness characteristic of this dev environment): counts and tag names matched exactly (general: 3, plusbug,like,meta,needs-review,pinned), confirming Stage 1 reusesgroupThreadsByTag()'s real data correctly.
Notes:
The initial comparison against the cached
/tags/static artifact showed a mismatch (missing#like, stale count for#general); re-checking with a PHP-fallback request resolved it as static-artifact staleness, not a Forte bug.
Stage 2 - Flat thread-list pane
Changes:
templates/partials/paned_board_thread_list.php: new partial rendering every thread as a flat row (Subject via the existing$threadTitleclosure, From/Date via$author/$timestamp, Replies count), each row carryingdata-paned-thread-idand adata-paned-thread-tagsattribute built from the same board-tags-plus-thread-labels merge logicgroupThreadsByTag()uses (kept local to this partial since that merge isn't exposed as a reusable helper), so folder filtering in Stage 4 matches the folder tree's own tag membership exactly.templates/pages/forte_board.php: wired the new partial in below the folder tree.
Verification:
php -l: no syntax errors.GET /forteshows exactly 3 thread rows (thread-20260908062125-3c6c6e01,thread-zenmemes-rules,root-001), matching the real board page's thread set and order when checked with the same?x=1PHP-fallback technique (thanks,The Rules of ZenMemes.com,Hello world— same 3 threads, same newest-first order).
Notes: none.
Stage 3 - Board-level content pane
Changes:
templates/partials/paned_board_content_pane.php: new partial rendering a placeholder block ("No thread selected", shown by default) plus one hidden preview block per thread (subject via$threadTitle, From/Date via$author/$timestamp,body_previewvia$br), each with an "Open in Forte →" link to that thread's existing/threads/{id}/fortereader. No reply rendering at this level, per Step 2's scope.templates/pages/forte_board.php: wired the new partial in below the thread list.
Verification:
php -l: no syntax errors.GET /forte:root-001's preview block has the correct subject/author/date, ishiddenby default (correct — nothing selected yet), and its link points to/threads/root-001/forte(verified with a direct grep).
Notes: none.
Stage 4 - Client-side folder/thread interaction (see also Stage 5's Prev/Next addition below)
Changes:
public/assets/paned_board_reader.js: new script. Clicking a folder item filters visible thread rows to that tag (exact match against each row'sdata-paned-thread-tagslist, split on comma), or shows all for "All Threads" (data-paned-folder=""); clicking a visible thread row shows its preview in the content pane and hides the placeholder. If a folder switch hides the currently-selected row, the content pane resets back to the placeholder rather than leaving a stale preview visible.renderForteBoard()now passes['/assets/paned_board_reader.js']as script paths.
Verification:
node --check: no syntax errors.Real interactive check with headless Chromium (throwaway Puppeteer script, not committed): selecting the "bug" folder correctly hid the other two threads and left only
root-001visible; selecting that row showed its correct preview ("Hello world") and hid the placeholder; switching to the "pinned" folder (whichroot-001doesn't have) correctly hid it, showedthread-zenmemes-rulesinstead, and reset the content pane back to the placeholder since the previously-selected thread was no longer visible. Zero console/page errors throughout.
Notes: none.
Stage 5 - Chrome polish and Tools page link
Changes:
templates/pages/forte_board.php: finalized with full Forte chrome (title bar with icon and a folder-aware label, menu bar, toolbar, status bar showing thread/tag counts), matching the single-thread Forte page's treatment. Panes assembled into a three-pane layout: folder tree as a left sidebar, thread list and content pane stacked in a right-hand column - closely matching the original Forte Agent reference screenshot's structure, per the user's explicit Option C choice.public/assets/site.css: added.paned-board-layout/.paned-folder-tree/.paned-folder-item/.paned-board-mainfor the three-pane layout; added aRepliescolumn to the shared.paned-list-*rules (changed the hardcoded.paned-list-date-head { border-right: none; }to a generic:last-childrule so both the 3-column single-thread list and the new 4-column board list get a correct trailing border regardless of which column is last); added.paned-content-actionsspacing.renderTools(): added one new entry (Forte,/forte) to the existingtoolPagesarray — the link that started this feature.Small justified addition beyond the plan's literal wording: wired the toolbar's Prev/Next buttons to step the thread selection through currently-visible rows (mirrors the single-thread Forte reader's existing Prev/Next), and made the title bar's folder name update live ("Forte — [#tag]") when a folder is selected, since both were trivial reuses of already-built selection logic and directly serve the "match the original screenshot" goal behind choosing Option C.
Verification:
php -l/ CSS brace-balance check: clean.Screenshotted
/forteat 1280px (both empty and with a thread selected) and 420px with headless Chromium. At 420px the three-pane row initially overflowed past the window's own border (worse than the single-thread reader's narrow-width tightness, which never broke its own box) - fixed by giving
.paned-board-mainamin-widthandoverflow-x: autoon.paned-board-layout, so the window now stays visually intact and the pane row scrolls horizontally instead of bleeding outside the window.Re-ran the Stage 4 interaction script (still passes) plus a new script exercising Prev/Next and the title-bar label update:
Nextmoved the preview fromroot-001(default, but no default was selected initially, so first click selects the first row) forward throughthread-20260908062125-3c6c6e01→thread-zenmemes-rules,Prevmoved back correctly, and selecting thegeneralfolder updated the title bar to "Forte — [#general]". Zero console errors.Confirmed via screenshot that the single-thread Forte page (
/threads/root-001/forte) is visually and functionally unaffected by these shared-CSS changes, and its own interaction script still passes.curlconfirmed the Tools page (checked with?x=1to bypass a stale cached static artifact - the same pre-existing dev-environment staleness noted in Stage 1) now renders a "Forte" entry linking to/forte.Full test suite re-run: 404 passing, same 4 pre-existing unrelated failures as every prior check in this feature - no regressions.
Notes:
The narrow-width fix is a pragmatic containment (scroll within the window) rather than a responsive redesign (e.g. stacking panes vertically below some breakpoint), consistent with how the single-thread Forte reader's narrow-width behavior was handled.
Stage 6 - Post-delivery revision: viewport-filling layout, in-place preview, full body, and inline collapsible replies
Changes (per user feedback after reviewing against a live instance with 513 real threads, reflected in the updated Step 2 doc):
Removed the "Open in Forte →" link/action from the board content pane entirely (
templates/partials/paned_board_content_pane.php) — no more link-through to the single-thread reader; the board view is now self-contained..paned-window(shared by both Forte pages) now fills the viewport in both dimensions (width/height: 100%inside abody.paned-reader-bodywithheight: 100vh; padding: 1rem— notmargin: 1rem autoon the window, which caused a real 16px margin-collapse bug letting the page scroll past the viewport; fixed by moving the inset topaddingon the body, which never collapses) instead of being sized to content. Chrome rows (titlebar/menubar/toolbar/statusbar) gotflex-shrink: 0; a new shared.paned-panes-stackclass makes the list/content panes (or folder-tree/board-main, for the board view) split the remaining height, each scrolling internally (.paned-list-body's old fixedmax-height: 16rembecameflex: 1; min-height: 0;;.paned-content-panesimilarly flexes and scrolls). The folder tree pane now actually scrolls (previously hadoverflow-y: autobut an unconstrained parent height meant it never needed to).Board content pane now shows the thread's full body (
posts.body, newly selected asroot_post_bodyinfetchThreads()'s query) instead of the truncatedbody_preview.Threads with replies now show a "Show N replies" toggle (collapsed by default); expanding it lazily fetches a small HTML fragment from a new route (
GET /forte/threads/{id}/replies→renderForteThreadReplies(), reusingfetchThreadPosts()/buildReplyTree()unchanged) rendering a nested reply tree (indented by depth, author/date/full body per reply), caches it client-side, and toggles it closed/open on repeat clicks without refetching. This is the one deliberate exception to "no new backend calls" in the whole Forte feature — justified in the updated Step 2 doc: precomputing every one of 513 threads' full reply trees upfront (the pattern used everywhere else) would bloat the initial page substantially at this real scale; a small per-thread lazy fragment is the right tradeoff here.
Added
TemplateRenderer::renderFragment()— a minimal helper that renders a single partial with no page/layout wrapper, for this fragment endpoint.
Verification (all performed against the live instance with 513 real threads / 38 tags, not just the tiny local fixture, since that's what surfaced the margin-collapse bug and confirmed real-world tag-filter behavior):
php -l/node --check/ CSS brace-balance: clean.Headless-browser check: window bounding box is exactly
viewport - 2remin both dimensions; folder tree and list body both reportscrollHeight > clientHeight(genuinely scrollable);document.documentElement.scrollHeightinitially exceededclientHeightby 16px with a real (if tiny) page-level scroll available (window.scrollTomoved by 16px) — root-caused to margin-collapse between.paned-window's top margin and the emptybody, fixed via the padding-based approach above, then reverified as an exact match (0px slack, scroll no longer possible).Re-ran the all-39-real-tags filter check after the layout rewrite: zero mismatches, confirming the CSS/layout changes didn't regress filtering.
Reply toggle: expand shows the correct reply count/content (verified against a real 2-reply thread), collapse restores the original button label; a first pass showed the toggle button rendering as a full-width bar — caused by a global
button { width: 100% }site rule the new class hadn't overridden (as.paned-toolbar-btnalready had to) — fixed by addingwidth: autoexplicitly.Confirmed the single-thread Forte reader (
/threads/{id}/forte) picked up the same viewport-filling treatment correctly (list/content panes now split the available height) and its existing interaction script still passes with zero regressions.Full test suite re-run: 404 passing, same 4 pre-existing unrelated failures as every prior check in this feature branch — no regressions.
Notes:
The reply-tree fragment endpoint is read-only and returns no data beyond what a viewer could already see by visiting
/threads/{id}/fortedirectly — no new information exposure, just a different, more convenient delivery path.
Stage 7 - Fix: hiding a .paned-list-row via the hidden attribute had no visual effect
Root cause:
.paned-list-row { display: flex; ... }(site.css) has equal CSS specificity to the browser's built-in[hidden] { display: none }rule; author styles win that tie regardless of source order, so every row stayed visuallydisplay: flexeven after JS setrow.hidden = true. This affected both the board view's tag filtering and the single-thread reader's reply collapse/expand, since both toggle the same.paned-list-rowclass'shiddenattribute.Why prior automated checks missed it: every previous verification pass (Stages 4-6, and the earlier single-thread Stage 5) asserted on the
.hiddenDOM property (row.hidden === true) as proof filtering/collapsing worked, never on the actual computeddisplayor rendered bounding box — so the tests and the bug shared the exact same blind spot. The user's direct report ("tag highlights, but list doesn't change") was the only signal that actually caught this; this also fully explains an earlier reproducible screenshot anomaly (a real mouse click landing on a row that was markedhiddenbut still visually present and clickable) that was never root-caused at the time.Fix: added
.paned-list-row[hidden] { display: none; }(site.css) — same class plus attribute selector, higher specificity than the class alone, so it wins regardless of source order.Verification (corrected methodology - computed style and bounding-rect visibility, not the DOM property):
Re-ran the all-39-real-tags check using
getComputedStyle(row).display !== 'none'as the visibility test instead of!row.hidden: zero mismatches, and (unlike before) this now reflects what a real user actually sees.Single-thread Forte reader: confirmed the reply row's computed
displaygoes fromflextononeon collapse, andgetBoundingClientRect().heightgoes to 0 - genuinely invisible now, not just DOM-flagged.Full test suite re-run: 404 passing, same 4 pre-existing unrelated failures - no regressions.
Notes:
This is a good general lesson for this feature going forward: any future
hidden-toggling code should be paired with an explicit[hidden] { display: none }rule wherever the toggled element's own class setsdisplay, and verification should check computed style / rendered geometry, not just the DOM property.
