Forte Reactions — Step 4: Implementation Summary

Stage 1 - Multi-root-safe thread-level binding

  • Changes:

    • public/assets/thread_reactions.js: the DOMContentLoaded init now loops over document.querySelectorAll("[data-thread-reactions-root]") and calls bindThreadReactions(root) per match, instead of binding only the first via document.querySelector. Mirrors the existing bindPostReactions loop immediately below it.

  • Verification:

    • node --check public/assets/thread_reactions.js clean.

    • curl confirmed classic's /threads/root-001 still has exactly one data-thread-reactions-root (unchanged markup).

    • Headless-browser test (Selenium + chromium-browser) on classic's thread page: clicked Like, handled the native username-setup prompt, confirmed the button transitions to "Liked" and becomes disabled — identical to pre-change behavior. One console 404 (/api/get_profile?profile_slug=...) observed, matching the same pre-existing "new identity, no profile yet" probe already documented in forte_identity_signing_step4_implementation_summary.md — not introduced by this change.

  • Notes:

    • Real multi-root verification (more than one thread's Like button on one page) happens in Stage 2, once Forte's board actually renders more than one data-thread-reactions-root.

Stage 2 - Like/Flag on the board content pane

  • Changes:

    • paned_board_content_pane.php: each thread's article gains data-thread-reactions-root/data-thread-id; a nested .post-card.paned-post-card[data-post-id] wraps the root post's body with Like (apply-thread-tag/like) and Flag (apply-post-tag/flag) buttons plus thread/post feedback paragraphs.

    • renderForteBoard(): added thread_reactions.js to the board's script list.

    • forte.css: new .paned-post-card/.paned-reaction-row/.paned-reaction-button/.paned-reaction-feedback rules matching the paned chrome.

  • Verification:

    • php -l clean.

    • Headless-browser test: with identity already prepared (composer touched first, standing in for Stage 5's not-yet-wired reaction-click trigger), Liked and Flagged a thread's root post — both correctly transition through pending to confirmed state; a second thread's Like worked fully independently, confirming Stage 1's fix. Zero unexpected console errors. Screenshot confirms styling matches the paned chrome.

    • Clicking Like/Flag before touching the composer correctly surfaces "Identity setup is unavailable. Reload the page and try again." — this is the expected, not-yet-closed gap Stage 5 exists to fix, not a bug in this stage.

  • Notes:

    • Bug found and fixed during this stage: bindPostReactions selects .post-card[data-post-id] — a hardcoded class name, not a data-attribute-only contract. The wrapper initially used only paned-post-card; Flag silently never bound until post-card was added alongside it.

    • Adding the (required) post-card class also pulls in unrelated site.css rules (position: relative, padding-bottom: 2.25rem) since that stylesheet loads on this page too; neutralized with a scoped override rather than forking the JS selector.

    • No data-role="thread-score" element was added — classic's own thread_root_card.php doesn't render one either (bindThreadReactions's score-update code is already a no-op there today), so this isn't a parity gap, just unused capability in the shared script.

Stage 3 - Flag on reply nodes

  • Changes:

    • paned_thread_reply_tree.php: each reply node's <div> gains post-card/paned-post-card classes and data-post-id (same contract Stage 2 established), plus a Flag button and post-reaction-feedback paragraph.

  • Verification:

    • php -l clean.

    • Headless-browser test: with identity pre-prepared (same stand-in as Stage 2), flagged a reply nested under a thread with existing replies; button correctly transitions through pending ("Publishing your public key in the background...") to confirmed ("Flagged." / disabled). Zero unexpected console errors. Screenshot confirms no interference with reply-tree rendering/indentation.

  • Notes:

    • Found, not implemented — matches the approved Step 2 scope: classic's own post_card.php actually gives replies both post-level Like and Flag (viewerHasLikedPost/viewerHasFlaggedPost). Step 2 explicitly scoped this feature to thread-level Like + post-level Flag only; adding reply-level Like now would be scope creep beyond what was approved. Worth a quick, low-ambiguity follow-up cycle if wanted, not folded in here.

Stage 4 - Persisted viewer reaction state on page load

  • Changes:

    • Application.php: new viewerThreadTagsForThreads(array $threadIds, string $tag, string $identityId): array — bulk sibling to viewerHasThreadTag(), one glob/scan of thread-label records covering every thread at once (mirrors how viewerPostTagsForPosts() already scans post-reactions once for many posts, not once per post).

    • renderForteBoard(): resolves the viewer profile, computes viewerLikedThreadIds (via the new bulk method, across all thread IDs) and viewerFlaggedPostIds (via the existing viewerPostTagsForPosts(), across every root post and reply post ID on the board), passes both to the page.

    • paned_board_content_pane.php / paned_thread_reply_tree.php: Like/Flag buttons render already-disabled with the applied label when the viewer's ID appears in the corresponding lookup.

  • Verification:

    • php -l clean; anonymous page load (curl, no cookie) confirmed clean (no PHP warnings/notices, viewerProfile === null branch short-circuits to empty arrays).

    • Headless-browser test: Liked a thread, then did a full fresh page navigation (not a DOM check mid-session) to /forte; the Like button loaded already "Liked"/disabled/aria-pressed="true" from the server-rendered state, not a client-side memory of the earlier click. Zero unexpected console errors.

    • Timing check (curl -H "Cookie: identity_hint=..." against a real previously-created identity, matching the plan's risk note about the new bulk query staying a single scan): 111ms with viewer-state lookups included vs. 76ms anonymous, at the board's current volume (~519 threads) — no per-thread N+1 query pattern.

  • Notes: none identified.

Stage 5 - Reaction clicks trigger identity prep without touching the composer

  • Changes:

    • thread_reactions.js: ensureReactionIdentity() now checks for window.ForumLazyComposeSigning (the loader lazy_compose_signing.js already exposes globally) and awaits its existing .load() before falling through to the original window.__forumBrowserIdentity check, instead of only throwing "Identity setup is unavailable."

  • Verification:

    • node --check clean.

    • Headless-browser test on Forte's board: clicked Like on a thread without ever touching the composer — confirmed openpgp_loader.js/browser_signing.js were absent beforehand, the identity-prep prompt appeared anyway, and the Like confirmed successfully; scripts loaded on demand.

    • Re-verified the existing composer-first path still works (Like + Flag, independent threads) — unaffected.

    • Re-verified classic's thread page (where window.ForumLazyComposeSigning never exists) is byte-for-byte unaffected — Like still works exactly as before.

  • Notes:

    • Deviated from the Step 3 plan's stated mechanism, same outcome: the plan called for a new site-wide click listener inside lazy_compose_signing.js. Implementing it that way would race against thread_reactions.js's own click listener — bubble-phase listeners fire target-outward, so the reaction root's listener (closer to the clicked button) would run before a document-level listener, meaning the identity check would still fail on the first click. Awaiting window.ForumLazyComposeSigning.load() directly inside ensureReactionIdentity() guarantees correct ordering and reuses the already-exposed global with no new listener at all. The approved requirement (reaction clicks work without touching the composer first) is unchanged.

    • Unrelated finding during verification, not fixed: this app caches rendered HTML for clean URLs (no query string) and only invalidates on content changes, not asset/source edits — a classic-page curl without a cache-busting query param can silently serve a page snapshot from earlier in a dev session, including stale asset hashes for a script edited since. Cache-busted all classic-page verification calls (?_cb=...) once this was found. Worth remembering for future sessions iterating on shared JS/CSS; not a bug in this feature.

Stage 6 - Full regression check

  • Changes: none (verification only, as planned).

  • Verification:

    • Classic's thread_root_card.php/post_card.php reaction markup confirmed byte-for-byte unchanged (git diff against the pre-feature commit) — this feature only extended shared JS, never classic's templates.

    • Forte's Reply flow re-verified end-to-end: anonymous reply lands back on /forte with tag/selection/highlight restored, unaffected.

    • Forte's New Thread dialog (a separate, unrelated feature sharing the same board page) re-verified: opens and closes correctly, confirming no interference from the reactions work.

    • Two additional threads' Like buttons (beyond Stages 2/5's own tests) confirmed working fully independently on the same board load.

    • Board load timing re-confirmed stable across three repeated cache-busted requests with a real identity: ~110ms each, matching Stage 4's original measurement at ~519 threads.

    • Zero unexpected console errors across the full regression run.

  • Notes:

    • This completes all 6 planned stages for forte_reactions. Forte's board now supports thread-level Like and post-level Flag (root posts and replies), reusing classic's endpoints and thread_reactions.js unchanged in behavior, with viewer reaction state persisted across page loads and reaction clicks able to trigger identity preparation on their own. Reply-level Like (which classic itself supports) was deliberately left out per the approved Step 2 scope — a candidate for a small follow-up cycle.
