Forte Shared Toolbar Step 4 Implementation Summary

Stage 1 - Shared toolbar partial and Board wiring

  • Changes:

    • New templates/partials/paned_toolbar.php: renders New/Reply/sep/Prev/Next/sep/Refresh/sep/Board/Users/Activity from three params - activeView ('board'|'activity'|'users'), boardControlsEnabled (bool), replyEnabled (bool). New/Reply/Prev/Next carry disabled when boardControlsEnabled is false (Reply additionally requires replyEnabled); Refresh is unconditionally disabled (unchanged placeholder); the Board/Users/Activity <a> buttons carry aria-current="page" when they match activeView.

    • templates/pages/forte_board.php: inline toolbar markup replaced with $partial('partials/paned_toolbar.php', ['activeView' => 'board', 'boardControlsEnabled' => true, 'replyEnabled' => $selectedThreadId !== '']) - adds the new self-referential "Board" button (not present before).

    • public/assets/forte.css: new .paned-window .paned-toolbar-btn[aria-current="page"] rule gives the active destination button a sunken/depressed look (--paned-chrome-dark background, inverted bevel border), the same bevel-inversion technique the existing :hover rule already uses in reverse.

  • Verification:

    • php -l on both changed PHP files: clean. CSS brace count balanced.

    • Raw HTTP against the live instance (http://127.0.0.1:8091/forte): toolbar renders New (enabled), Reply (disabled, no thread selected by default - unchanged from before), Prev/Next (enabled), Refresh (disabled), Board (aria-current="page"), Users (plain), Activity (plain) - confirms the new Board button appears and existing enable/disable behavior for New/Reply/Prev/Next is unchanged.

    • Full test suite: 399 passing / 9 failing, identical failing set to the known pre-existing baseline (5 BrowserSigningNormalizationTest + 4 LocalAppSmokeTest, unrelated to this change) - no regressions.

  • Notes: none.

Stage 2 - Activity wiring

  • Changes:

    • templates/pages/forte_activity.php: ad hoc "Board" + "Refresh" toolbar markup replaced with $partial('partials/paned_toolbar.php', ['activeView' => 'activity', 'boardControlsEnabled' => false, 'replyEnabled' => false]).

  • Verification:

    • php -l: clean.

    • Raw HTTP against the live instance (http://127.0.0.1:8091/forte/activity/): New/Reply/Prev/Next all disabled, Refresh disabled, Board/Users plain links, Activity carries aria-current="page".

    • Full test suite: 399 passing / 9 failing, same set as Stage 1 - no regressions.

  • Notes: none.

Stage 3 - Users wiring and chrome drop

  • Changes:

    • templates/pages/forte_users.php: outer wrapper changed from paned-window paned-standalone-window to plain paned-window; added the paned-menubar row and $partial('partials/paned_toolbar.php', ['activeView' => 'users', 'boardControlsEnabled' => false, 'replyEnabled' => false]); removed the paned-dialog-titlebar "Users" heading (superseded by the toolbar's selected Users button) and the paned-standalone-back link (superseded by the toolbar's Board button). The paned-standalone-body user list itself is untouched.

  • Verification:

    • php -l: clean.

    • Raw HTTP against the live instance (http://127.0.0.1:8091/forte/users/): toolbar renders with New/Reply/Prev/Next/Refresh all disabled, Board plain, Users aria-current="page"; all ~40 user rows render unchanged below it; the old paned-standalone-back markup is gone (grep -c returns 0).

    • Full test suite: 399 passing / 9 failing, same set as Stage 1 - no regressions.

  • Notes: a headless Chromium screenshot to a nested scratch-directory path silently failed (reported "bytes written" but the file never appeared) - worked fine once retargeted to the repo working directory instead, and that screenshot (see Stage 4) confirmed the Stage 3 risk resolves cleanly: the full-width user list under the toolbar reads fine, no CSS fix needed.

Stage 4 - Regression pass across all three views

  • Changes: none - pure verification, no defects found.

  • Verification:

    • Headless-Chromium screenshots (chromium-browser --headless --disable-gpu --no-sandbox --screenshot=..., 1280x900) of all three views against the live instance:

      • /forte: toolbar identical to pre-change Board (New/Prev/Next enabled, Reply disabled with no thread selected, Refresh disabled), plus the new "Board" button shown depressed/selected - no visual regression.

      • /forte/activity/: New/Reply/Prev/Next/Refresh all correctly greyed out (disabled), "Activity" shown depressed/selected, Board/Users plain - list and detail panes render correctly (detail-pane padding fix from the prior session's toolbar-unrelated bug also confirmed still intact).

      • /forte/users/: same disabled set, "Users" shown depressed/selected, full user list renders correctly at full toolbar width below it.

    • Confirmed the Board page's data-paned-board-new/-reply/-prev/-next attributes (which paned_board_reader.js binds click handlers to) are byte-identical in the new shared partial's output to what Board rendered before Stage 1 - no JS file was modified, so existing New/Reply/Prev/Next/keyboard behavior on Board is unaffected structurally; disabled buttons on Activity/Users are natively inert (no click handlers exist on those pages regardless, since neither page includes paned_board_reader.js).

    • Native disabled attributes mean disabled buttons are automatically skipped in Tab order by the browser - no extra keyboard-nav code needed or written.

    • Full test suite (final): 399 passing / 9 failing, identical failing set to the pre-change baseline across every stage - no regressions from any stage.

  • Notes: none.
