Forte Step 1 Solution Assessment
Problem Statement
Users want to explore a Usenet/Forte Agent-like interface using the existing forum backend and frontend capabilities. Source: thread-20260826040940-e11484cf, submitted 2026-08-26T04:09:40Z.
Option A: Add a compact threaded-reader view
Pros:
Captures the main Usenet-reader feel without changing storage.
Can reuse existing thread and post data.
Smallest useful product slice.
Cons:
Does not add advanced offline/newsreader behavior.
May duplicate current thread views.
Option B: Add a full alternate reader mode
Pros:
Better match for Forte Agent-style navigation.
Can include keyboard-first movement, panes, and read/unread state.
Cons:
Larger UI and preference surface.
Requires clear scope for read state and shortcuts.
Option C: Build protocol/export compatibility first
Pros:
Moves toward real newsreader interoperability.
Could support external clients later.
Cons:
Far beyond current backend/frontend-only scope.
Adds protocol and security complexity.
Recommendation
Recommend Option B.
Brief justification:
User clarified the actual target: a two-pane master/detail reader (nested-reply title list + content pane) visually modeled on Forte Agent, which is the paned navigation experience described in Option B rather than the single denser list in Option A.
Still backend/frontend-only, reusing existing thread/post data — no protocol/export work (Option C) is needed.
Scope must stay bounded: no read-state persistence or custom keyboard shortcuts beyond what's needed for basic pane selection, to avoid the "large preference surface" risk called out in Option B's cons.
_Revision note: supersedes the prior Option A recommendation after user feedback requested a paned, Forte-Agent-styled layout. Requires fresh "Approved Step 1" before Step 2 proceeds._
