Step 4: Implementation Summary — SQLite Query Panel Side-by-Side Layout

Stage 1 - Restructure query panel markup

  • Changes:

    • templates/pages/sqlite_viewer.php: wrapped the SQL editor controls (preset select, textarea, run button, status message) in a new .sqlite-query-editor container, and added a .sqlite-query-layout wrapper (carrying a bare data-query-layout hook, no value yet) around it and the existing .sqlite-query-output results container

    • No existing id/data-role attributes renamed or removed

  • Verification:

    • php -l templates/pages/sqlite_viewer.php — no syntax errors

    • Started this repo's own local server (./v3 start 127.0.0.1:8010, run from inside the repo so ./v3's root resolution points at this checkout — an unrelated pre-existing PHP server was already bound to the default port 8000 from a different checkout on the same machine, so a distinct port was required to avoid testing against the wrong app)

    • Drove the page with Playwright (borrowed install at /home/wsl/uncommon_applications_v1/node_modules/playwright, headless Chromium) against 127.0.0.1:8010: loaded the database, ran SELECT 1 AS one, 2 AS two;, confirmed the results table rendered correctly and no console/page errors occurred

    • Screenshotted the panel at 1400px viewport width — layout is visually unchanged (editor above results), as expected since no CSS was added in this stage

  • Notes:

    • Confirmed sqlite_viewer.js selects all elements via root.querySelector('[data-role="..."]') from the page root (not scoped to direct children), so the new wrapper <div>s do not affect any JS behavior

    • An initial verification pass accidentally targeted the unrelated port-8000 server instead of this repo; caught and redone against the correct instance (port 8010) before writing this summary

Stage 2 - Responsive split-layout CSS

  • Changes:

    • public/assets/site.css: added .sqlite-query-layout (default stacked flex column), min-width: 0 on .sqlite-query-editor/.sqlite-query-output (prevents grid blowout with wide result tables), and a @media (min-width: 960px) rule switching the default to a two-column grid (minmax(280px, 420px) 1fr)

    • Also added explicit [data-query-layout="stacked"] / [data-query-layout="split"] override selectors, unwired to any control, so a future front-end toggle only needs to set the attribute value — no further CSS work

  • Verification:

    • Confirmed via Playwright against 127.0.0.1:8010 (this repo): at 1400px, .sqlite-query-layout computed display: grid with the expected grid-template-columns; at 700px, computed display: flex (stacked)

    • Ran a query end-to-end at both widths (load database, run SELECT 1 AS one, 2 AS two;) — results rendered correctly, no console/page errors at either width

    • Ran SELECT * FROM activity; (wide result set) at 1400px in split mode and confirmed document.documentElement.scrollWidth === clientWidth — the results column scrolls internally instead of causing page-level horizontal overflow

    • Screenshotted all three scenarios (wide split, narrow stacked, wide overflow check) and visually confirmed correct layout

  • Notes:

    • Breakpoint chosen (960px) is new, wider than the existing 640px breakpoint in site.css, since two columns need more room than the existing narrow/wide split point provides

Post-implementation fix - Preset query select overflow

  • Changes:

    • public/assets/site.css: added [data-role="sqlite-query-select"] { width: 100%; box-sizing: border-box; } — the global input, textarea, button width rule doesn't cover <select>, so the preset dropdown was sizing to its longest option text and overlapping the results column in split layout

  • Verification:

    • Confirmed via Playwright screenshot at 1400px that the select now stays within the editor column and no longer overlaps the results

  • Notes:

    • Scoped to this specific select (not the shared input, textarea, button rule) to avoid affecting the unrelated <select> on the Feature Flags page, which sits inline next to a submit button
