Step 4: Implementation Summary — Toolbar Identity Status Indicator

Feature plan: Step 1 · Step 2 · Step 3 · Step 4

Stage 1 - Server-side viewer status available to templates

  • Changes:

    • RouteServices: added a second resolver closure (lenientViewerProfileResolver), memoized the same way as the existing viewerProfileResolver, and injected its result as pageData['viewerProfile'] inside renderStandalonePage() whenever the caller hasn't already supplied that key.

    • Application::routeServices(): wired the new closure to the existing resolveViewerProfileFromIdentityHint(...) method — the same session/cookie-aware resolver ForteBoardController already uses for its like/flag lookups — rather than the stricter session-only resolver RouteServices uses for renderPageTemplate(), so the toolbar's best-guess matches Step 1's Option A/C intent without changing behavior for other, non-Forte pages.

    • ForteBoardController::board(): passed its already-resolved $viewerProfile into pageData['viewerProfile'] directly, avoiding a redundant duplicate lookup via the new default (it already resolves this value for like/flag lookups).

    • tests/LocalAppSmokeTest.php: updated both direct new RouteServices(...) construction sites to supply the new constructor argument.

  • Verification:

    • php -l on all 4 changed files.

    • php tests/run.php LocalAppSmokeTest — 112 passed / 3 failed; all 3 failures are pre-existing/long-standing (tracked as failing since before this change: testAnonymousPublicBoardDoesNotStartViewerSession, testPostAndActivityLinkAdjacentSignatureFiles, testSqliteViewerRouteUsesToolsShellAndPublishedSource), unrelated to this change.

    • Confirmed /forte, /forte/users/, and /forte/activity/ still render without error via existing tests that hit those routes (e.g. testPrivateForteRoutesRecoverExpiredSessionsInsteadOfReturningFalseNotFound).

  • Notes: No visible UI change yet — this stage only makes viewer status available in page data for all three Forte pages (board, users, activity) plus the Forte profile pages, through a single shared injection point. Stage 2 renders it in the toolbar.

Stage 2 - Toolbar renders the indicator from server-seeded data

  • Changes:

    • templates/partials/paned_toolbar.php: derive a display name from $viewerProfile['username'] (falling back to profile_slug) and render a right-hand badge reading that name, or "Guest" when no profile resolved. Uses the existing .paned-agent-badge style rather than a new one, wrapped in a new .paned-toolbar-identity element carrying data-paned-identity-status / data-identity-logged-in / data-paned-identity-label hooks for Stage 3/4's client script.

    • public/assets/forte.css: added .paned-toolbar-identity { margin-left: auto; ... } so the badge sits at the toolbar's right edge without disturbing the existing left-packed buttons.

  • Verification:

    • php tests/run.php LocalAppSmokeTest — same 112 passed / 3 pre-existing failures as Stage 1; no new failures.

    • Manual: rendered /forte, /forte/users/, /forte/activity/ as guest (no session/cookie) and as the fixture's one approved identity ($_SESSION['authenticated_identity_id'] set, matching the pattern used elsewhere in LocalAppSmokeTest). Guest case rendered data-identity-logged-in="0" with label "Guest" on all three pages. Authenticated case rendered data-identity-logged-in="1" with the resolved profile's actual username value on all three pages (confirmed against the resolver's own output via reflection — the fixture's one approved identity happens to have the literal username "guest", a coincidence of the fixture data, not a bug: the indicator correctly reflected whatever username the resolver returned).

  • Notes: First-paint value only (server/cookie best guess); Stage 3 adds the authoritative localStorage correction.

Stage 3 - Client-side localStorage correction

  • Changes:

    • public/assets/toolbar_identity_status.js (new): on load, reads forum_pki_public_key/forum_pki_private_key/forum_pki_username directly from localStorage (the same raw keys and try/catch pattern account_key.php's own inline script already uses) and updates every [data-paned-identity-status] node's data-identity-logged-in attribute and [data-paned-identity-label] text if it disagrees with the server-seeded guess. Deliberately does not depend on browser_signing.js/window.__forumBrowserIdentity, since that bundle is lazy-loaded only when a signing action is needed and isn't guaranteed present on a plain page view.

    • ForteBoardController, ForteActivityController, ForteUserDirectoryController: added /assets/toolbar_identity_status.js to each page's script-path list.

  • Verification:

    • php tests/run.php LocalAppSmokeTest — same 112 passed / 3 pre-existing failures; no new failures.

    • Confirmed the script tag is present in rendered output of /forte, /forte/users/, and /forte/activity/.

    • Node vm-sandboxed behavioral test of the script against a mock DOM/localStorage: no local identity -> logged-in=0/"Guest"; full keypair + username -> logged-in=1/the stored username; only one of the two keys present (incomplete) -> logged-in=0/"Guest".

  • Notes: Runs once on load only; Stage 4 adds the cross-tab storage listener.

Stage 4 - Live cross-tab update

  • Changes:

    • public/assets/toolbar_identity_status.js: added window.addEventListener('storage', syncIdentityIndicator), mirroring the same pattern account_key.php's own inline script already uses (window.addEventListener('storage', syncSimpleUI)), so the badge re-runs its correction whenever another tab changes the local keypair/username.

  • Verification:

    • php tests/run.php LocalAppSmokeTest — same 112 passed / 3 pre-existing failures; no new failures.

    • Node vm-sandboxed behavioral test simulating a cross-tab change: started guest (logged-in=0/"Guest"); fired a simulated storage event after writing a full keypair + username to the mock store -> updated live to logged-in=1/the stored username with no reload; fired another simulated storage event after clearing the keypair -> updated live back to logged-in=0/"Guest".

  • Notes: This completes the Step 3 Completion Contract — the toolbar's right-hand side now shows accurate, self-correcting, live-updating logged-in/guest status on all three Forte views through the normal page-load flow.

Post-handoff restyle - Icon link, user-mocked design

User mocked up a restyled indicator live in the browser during review and specified the exact markup/CSS/JS; applied as given, with two implementation details filled in to match existing codebase convention rather than left to guesswork.

  • Changes:

    • templates/partials/paned_toolbar.php: replaced the <span class="paned-agent-badge"> badge with an <a class="paned-toolbar-btn paned-toolbar-identity"> icon link (person-outline SVG + label), matching the other toolbar buttons' shape. No longer uses .paned-agent-badge (left untouched for its other use in the reply tree). href uses $viewerProfile['username_token'] (falling back to profile_slug), matching the existing /forte/user/<token> convention already used in paned_user_detail_pane.php and forte_profile.php — not the raw display username, which can contain characters unsafe for a URL. title added for a native tooltip.

    • public/assets/forte.css: added the five .paned-toolbar-identity-scoped rules (row layout, icon sizing, label ellipsis truncation past max-width: 10rem, dimmed color when guest, filled icon when logged in), placed right after the .paned-toolbar-btn rule group as specified; kept the existing right-alignment rule as-is.

    • public/assets/toolbar_identity_status.js: added href/title updates to the existing correction loop, as specified.

  • Verification:

    • php tests/run.php LocalAppSmokeTest — same 112 passed / 3 pre-existing failures; no new failures.

    • Manual render check confirmed href/title/data-identity-logged-in/label all correct for guest and authenticated fixture states, and that .paned-agent-badge no longer appears in this partial's output.

    • Node vm behavioral test confirmed the JS sets href/title correctly on initial load and after a simulated cross-tab storage event, including URL-encoding a username containing a space.

    • Browser verification (Python Playwright driving headless Chromium against ./v3 start, since no chromium-cli/MCP browser tool was available in this session): screenshotted the toolbar in guest and (via a locally-injected fake keypair) logged-in states, hovered the link (confirmed the existing .paned-toolbar-btn:hover bevel applies), and clicked it — navigated to /forte/user/guest and rendered that user's real profile page, with zero browser console errors.

  • Notes: Not a new Step 3 stage; a review-cycle revision to Stage 2's visual before merge, per the user's own live-mocked design.
