Rewrite of the post above with the AI-writing tells taken out:

Discord is going to start putting some server conversations on the open web. This only covers Discoverable Servers: servers with 1,000+ members whose admins opted into Server Discovery. Most servers aren't affected.

Timeline: on November 16, 2026, every Discoverable Server gets a public web page, which may show summaries. Around mid-December, messages from eligible public channels may start showing up on those pages and in web search. Discord says that part rolls out gradually.

Opting out: admins can exclude some or all channels under Server Settings > Web Presence. Public channels are in by default. Users can hide their own messages under User Settings > Data and Privacy. A server that wants no web page at all can turn off Discoverability.

The upside is obvious to anyone who has gone looking for a fix and found it locked inside somebody's Discord. The catch is that people wrote in those channels thinking the audience was the server. Making years of old messages searchable changes that deal after the fact, and opt-out defaults put the work on the people least likely to notice.

Under that is a question of control. A community can build up years of knowledge and still has to wait for Discord to decide whether outsiders see it, and in what form. Getting indexed by search engines doesn't give you an export you can read, search offline, keep, or take somewhere else. And showing up in search results doesn't give anyone permission to republish the conversation.

Open source wouldn't fix this on its own, and exporting a group archive raises its own privacy questions. Still, a platform should let people choose what's public, let them download their own posts in a usable format, and give communities a real way to archive and move what they've built, with the consent of the people who wrote it.
