Subject: Ram Dass: 8 powerful teachings for ordinary life

1/ Ram Dass's teachings reach well beyond "Be Here Now."

Here are 8 of his most powerful ideas, in my own words.

2/ You can observe your thoughts without believing every one.

Notice the worry, the judgment, the urge to defend yourself. Getting curious about your mind gives you more freedom in how you respond.

3/ Stop postponing your life.

The mind keeps offering conditions: when I'm healed, when I'm successful, when someone loves me.

Practice being present while things are unfinished. This moment counts too.

4/ Watch how easily love becomes a contract.

I'll love you if you reassure me, agree with me, stay who I need you to be.

Practice seeing the person beyond the role you've assigned them.

5/ Your identity is useful—and easy to get trapped inside.

Your job, history, achievements, and wounds shape your experience. Hold them lightly enough that you can still discover who you are.

6/ Suffering can become a teacher.

When life breaks your expectations, you may begin to see what you were clinging to.

That discovery can open space for compassion, including toward yourself.

7/ Service is spiritual practice.

Pay attention to the person you're helping. Notice when your need to feel useful gets in the way of hearing what they actually need.

Let the encounter change you too.

8/ Compassion includes your own messy humanity.

You can notice jealousy, fear, or anger without turning them into another reason to hate yourself.

Honesty and tenderness can exist together.

9/ Keep practicing in ordinary life.

Return to your breath. Listen to someone fully. Feed someone. Notice yourself getting caught, and begin again.

There is always another opportunity to bring awareness and love into what you're doing.
