Subject: Ram Dass's more woo-woo takes: souls, astral planes, gurus, and cosmic dreams

Ram Dass gets remembered for "Be Here Now." But his worldview also included reincarnation, astral planes, gurus, miracles, and a reality beyond our senses.

Here are some of his more "woo-woo" takes, paraphrased with affection. These are his spiritual teachings and beliefs, not established scientific findings.

1/ Your current personality is one chapter in a much longer journey.

He spoke of souls moving through repeated incarnations. Your present identity belongs to this lifetime; the journey toward awakening extends beyond it.

2/ Physical reality is only one plane of existence.

He described physical, astral, and causal planes: bodies, subtler forms, and the patterns behind those forms. In this account, the world our senses report is part of a larger reality.

3/ Even being a soul is something you eventually let go of.

This is the twist: identifying as a soul can loosen your attachment to the ego. But ultimate liberation also means releasing the sense of being a separate soul.

4/ A guru can work with you beyond an ordinary physical encounter.

He described spiritual guidance arriving through a teacher, through life's circumstances, or through an inner guide. His relationship with Neem Karoli Baba was central to how he understood that guidance.

5/ Miracles can shake your confidence that you already know what's possible.

He enjoyed telling stories of his guru's extraordinary abilities. Part of their purpose in his teaching was to disturb the listener's settled picture of reality and open a question about what the senses can know.

6/ Reincarnation is still inside the dream.

He could talk seriously about rebirth while also treating it as another level of relative reality. Exchanging one identity for another—even across lifetimes—doesn't finish the work of waking up.

7/ The destination is beyond separateness.

His mystical map leads toward recognition of a shared underlying consciousness. Even the elaborate map of worlds, beings, and lifetimes must eventually be released.

What I find striking is where all this cosmic speculation lands in practice: pay attention, love people, and serve whoever is in front of you.
