Understood Intent

Proceed with the recommended read-only task-list rendering following the merged list-structure slice. Show checked/unchecked state clearly through existing Docs URLs. Editing controls and the separately recorded wider-column layout remain outside this cycle; no merged-branch reuse.

Problem and evidence

Literal [x] / [ ] task markers make checklist completion harder to scan than a clear read-only state. The refreshed source scan at merged main 682ab5b40 covers 1,420 tracked eligible Markdown documents: 644 checked + 538 unchecked candidates across 47 documents. Checked/unchecked document counts overlap; these are unordered-item source candidates, not guaranteed rendered checkboxes. Earlier 1,168-marker totals remain historical.

Display task state using native disabled checkboxes associated with each task's text, through the existing Docs reader.

  • Pros: familiar state and platform semantics; little custom accessibility machinery.

  • Cons: disabled-state contrast and appearance vary; verify themes, accessible naming and adjacent links before acceptance.

Option B — Noninteractive status symbols

Use styled checked/unchecked symbols with explicitly announced accessible state.

  • Pros: more control over themed presentation and no control affordance.

  • Cons: custom semantics/contrast need more maintenance; symbols alone cannot establish accessibility.

Recommendation and viable slice

Choose A, beginning with measured unordered task items in lists already supported by the renderer. Render leading [ ], [x] and [X] as labeled read-only state; keep nesting, continuation paragraphs, safe inline links and ordered-procedure behavior intact. Do not add toggling, persistence, source writes or explanatory UI copy. Code examples, literal markers elsewhere and unsupported whole-list source regions remain unchanged.

Deliver through ordinary Platform Docs URLs with identical PHP/generated output, phone/keyboard and default/Word97/Chicago/Midnight checks, and existing publication failure/retry recovery. Representative sources include the agent API onboarding and UI-copy audit checklists. No new component, dependency, source-document rewrite or broader syntax extension. Keep within one day/eight stages; Step 2 must define marker boundaries and accessible naming before implementation.

Requests and approval

User authorized proceeding with the recommended task-list work after accepting/merging list structure. User explicitly approved Step 1; continue to Step 2. Implementation remains unapproved. Wider Docs layout stays a separate recorded follow-up; no reuse of a merged feature branch.

Study checkpoint

railspike-effort / v3/markdown_task_lists, v1/R1/P2, baseline 682ab5b40, Codex single exposed rater. Intake 0.35, Step 1 0.35 total reaffirmed, including theme/accessibility, corpus and copied-publication/recovery evidence. Comparable to the 0.35 toolbar-identity reference because state crosses normal/generated views, above 0.30 score emphasis for state semantics, below 0.65 tables because parsing/list ownership already exists. R1 hashes verified; prior renderer/calibration exposure disclosed in the intake/debug log. No implementation, measured labor, independent rating, acceptance or accepted-count increment.
