Scripture Response Quality and Latency Implementation Summary

Planning commit: 075f91e7. Stages 1–4 are implemented. Stage 5 found no qualifying candidate; Stage 6 is blocked pending reassessment. Candidate settings are not released.

Stage 1 - Isolated normal-flow measurement

  • Changes: Copied the exact working-tree baseline prompts into frozen fixtures; added eight cases, source-review rubric, isolated application/repository setup, durable reservation-based call/spend ledger, and a real HTTP/browser/CLI baseline probe.

  • Verification: python tests/Support/test_scripture_evaluation.py passed; browser probe passed against an isolated PHP server, creating a thread, selecting scripture analysis, running the ordinary queue CLI, and reloading to observe the canonical reply. Stub request took 190 ms; submission-to-visible completion took 593 ms. Diff check passed.

  • Notes: This is a plumbing measurement, not a live latency result. Baseline browser discovery explicitly uses a reload; no hidden direct fulfillment. Every application database and reply-agent key directory is under the temporary copied application. No live provider calls have occurred.

Stage 2 - Scoped generation candidates

  • Changes: Added opt-in revised scripture guidance and a scripture-only reasoning setting; the default remains current guidance with provider-default reasoning. Other analysis modes and moderation payloads remain unchanged. Unsupported provider/model/effort combinations fail explicitly. Included the previously approved scope edit in the current prompt; the frozen baseline contains the same bytes.

  • Verification: Generator/provider/configuration suites: 22 passed. Covered candidate routing, other-mode isolation, unchanged completion allowance, unsupported settings, and exhausted-output rejection. PHP lint and diff checks passed. The example quotation was verified against Proverbs 21:5 KJV.

  • Notes: Candidate guidance is selected only with SCRIPTURE_RESPONSE_GUIDANCE=revised; effort is opt-in through SCRIPTURE_RESPONSE_REASONING_EFFORT. No live calls or production configuration changes.

Stage 3 - Initial request execution and discovery

  • Changes: Added opt-in immediate dispatch for newly queued scripture tasks through the existing CLI, with a bounded wait for the shared worker lock. Added a read-only, visibility-checked status route and automatic insertion of the canonical server-rendered reply card; polling resumes after reload and preserves existing drafts. Other modes do not dispatch through this path.

  • Verification: Queue/launcher/status suites and feedback/idempotency follow-ups: 29 distinct checks passed. Real HTTP/Chromium tests passed on thread/desktop and standalone-post/mobile views with a deliberately busy worker, duplicate requests, and pending-page reload. Reply appeared automatically in about 5.0/5.1 seconds including the imposed three-second lock hold. Draft preservation passed. PHP/JS syntax and diff checks passed.

  • Notes: A first browser probe selected the readonly composer placeholder; the probe was corrected to open the actual composer before filling it. Launch failure retains durable queued work for scheduled/explicit recovery. Immediate dispatch defaults off pending acceptance; no live provider calls yet.

Stage 4 - Expansion execution and timing

  • Changes: Extended revised guidance and the existing scripture-only reasoning setting to expansion; newly queued expansions use the shared optional worker dispatch. Added optional private enqueue/worker/generation/publication phase markers and documented operator controls and rollback.

  • Verification: php tests/run.php AgentResponseGeneratorTest ScriptureTaskLauncherTest plus six expansion integration methods: 18 passed. Isolated HTTP/Chromium desktop/thread and mobile/post probes passed with revised guidance, immediate dispatch, duplicate initial/expansion requests, requester auto-open, and busy workers. Mobile pending-page reload passed; initial reply appeared in 5.09 seconds and expansion in 6.43 seconds, each including a deliberate three-second worker lock. Existing tests cover changed/hidden sources, source races, explicit retry, deterministic replay, cache and offline visibility. PHP/JS syntax and diff checks passed.

  • Notes: These are stub plumbing timings, not provider acceptance measurements. Candidate settings and timing remain opt-in; production settings were not changed. Live comparison and release gates remain outstanding.

Stage 5 - Initial comparison and reassessment

  • Changes: Added a budget-guarded provider proxy, frozen normal HTTP/browser/worker trial runner, anonymous review packets, per-answer source checks, and the evaluation report. Executed all 48 scheduled generation calls without retuning candidate artifacts.

  • Verification: Forty-seven complete visible canonical replies; one interrupted provider call retained its full reservation and was never repeated. All 777 frozen source/prompt artifacts remained unchanged. Budget/proxy/resumption tests: six passed; initial and expansion runner flows passed with stubs, including canonical punctuation normalization for the NIV case. Generator/provider/configuration/launcher suites: 21 passed. JS/Python syntax and diff checks passed.

  • Results: Median visible completion A/B/C: 27.80/25.01/8.94 seconds (C: 15 completed samples). All-rubric passes: 0/16, 6/16, 5/16 respectively, with one C sample not assessable after interruption. Critical quotation errors: 1/4/1. Estimated/reserved spend: $0.05746010 across 48 generation calls and zero supporting moderation calls. Detailed source evidence, failed-attempt accounting and measurement limitations are in the report.

  • Notes: No candidate qualifies. Stage 6's provisional-winner dependency is unsatisfied, so twelve paid expansion trials, promotion and release were not performed. The approved contract requires reassessment after failed gates. Defaults, production configuration and historical replies remain unchanged; the feature is not declared complete.
